China to Host 1st International Wushu Festival in Zhengzhou

Xinhua News Agency Oct. 11, 2004 - One hundred and five teams from 45 countries and regions have registered to take part in the first international wushu festival, slated from October 16-20 in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, organizers said in Zhengzhou, Central China on Saturday.The international festival, the first and the biggest of the kind, is sanctioned by the International Wushu Federation, featuring some 2,000 wushu players in six aged groups in four categories of quanshu (Fist martial art), equipment, one-on-one and team events. During the festival, organizers will also host seminars on martial arts, group performances and tours to Shaolin Temple at Songshan Mountain. Some 30,000 wushu players will line up along the 20-kilometer highway in 200 groups to give their Shaolin performances.

CRI.com September 28, 2004 - The 2004 China Qufu International Confucius Cultural Festival has opened in Qufu City in east China's Shandong Province.A grand ceremony will be held to honor Confucius. A series of academic and commercial programs will also be included. Confucius (551 B.C.- 479 B.C.) was a great ancient Chinese educator and philosopher born in Qufu. This year is the 2555th anniversary of his birth.Confucius is regarded as a great thinker in the Chinese history. Confucianism, the school of thought that developed from his ideas, has had great influence on China's political, cultural and social environment for thousands of years.The local government has been developing its cultural industries with the rich resources of Confucianism. From January to August, 60 percent of the city’s revenue was contributed by cultural industries, which totaled 230 million yuan (US$27.8 million).
