Madrid has so much to offer when it comes to beautiful public gardens. Madrid is often referred to as Europe's greenest capital city. There is a vast expanse of parklands around Madrid that make it a very pleasant city to visit. If you decide to visit Madrid these five parks are worth visiting:
1. Park Retiro is an absolutely magnificent park and is comprised of several sculptures, monuments, parklands and a lake. There is some very beautiful architecture to admire. The beauty of Park Retiro is that it is only 10 minutes walk from the city's main historical centre.
In the middle of the park, you will see el Estanque del Retiro referred to as Retiro Pond. It can be used for boating and is ideal during weekends. By the lake, there is a collection of monumental semicircular colonnade built in honor of King Alfonso XII. With majestic figurines, colossal columns and lion statues, the colonnade is worth viewing.
2. Casa de Campo is an extremely unique park consisting of 1722 hectares and is one of Europe's largest parks. It is comprised of an attraction park, zoo and cable car where you can get a glimpse of beautiful Madrid.
In summer, there are a lot of music festivals held at Case de Campo. This a great place to come to and unwind.
3. The Royal Botanical gardens is situated right in the heart of the city. Designed by the architect Francesco Sabatini, with later work by Juan de Villanueva the gardens are comprised of plants from five continents, with a vast number from South America and the Philippines.
Madrid's warm climate enables the Royal Botanical Gardens to be open all year round. It is a fantastic place to unwind and relax over lunch while admiring the surrounds.
4. Campo del Moro and Sabatini Gardens are situated behind the Royal Palace in Madrid. These gardens belong to the famous Royal Palace in Madrid and were opened to the public in 1978 by King, Juan Carlos I.
The gardens have been sculpted to represent a classic European style, comprising of geometrical patterns and fountains. On weekends, there are numerous buskers performing on their harmonicas and accordions in these gardens which can be a rather uplifting experience.
5. Parque del Oeste is an absolutely marvelous park, which can be found on the western end of Madrid. Unlike the royal gardens, this park has been carefully sculpted in an extremely naturalistic style, boasting open grass spaces.
The main attraction here is the Rosaleda, which is comprised of a gorgeous rose garden decorated with Victorian fountains and rose vines. This park is extremely popular with locals and tourists due to its central location, and is very close to several historic sights
There is much to see in Madrid and the beauty of these parks is that they are close to other historical sights such as the Royal Palace and are within walking distance from the city centre.
