If you are in the midst of planning your next vacation, the Long Beach Peninsula has a wide variety of activities for you and your family to enjoy. Nestled on the very Southwest corner of Washington State, the Long Beach Peninsula is gaining popularity and recognition for its many area attractions and the beauty unique to the Pacific Northwest.
Many families and couples are excited to get away from the rush-rush lifestyle that many of us live on a daily basis. Yet, vacations aren't cheap and with the economy the way it's been lately, many have found it challenging to take that much needed time of leisure.
Having lived on the peninsula for over 14 years, I have found great pleasure in being able to enjoy many activities at low cost or even no cost at all. Therefore, I wanted to share a list of suggestions for you to enjoy while you visit the peninsula. Save your money for great accommodations and fine dining.
- Grab your binoculars! The beach is noted for the hundreds of bird species that live between the beach and the bay. You'll also want to keep your eyes peeled for marine mammals such as seals and sea lions. Both are plentiful in the Columbia River and off the ocean shores.
- Attention storm watchers! We've had some amazing storms rip through the peninsula during our winter months and you'll find some wonderful treasures along the shoreline. Look for glass floats, distinctive pieces of driftwood and Japanese bottles that may wash up along the 28 miles of our sandy beaches.
- Gather mushrooms and berries in the woods.
- Grab a camera and capture the beauty of the Columbia River, the lovely countryside, birds, wildlife, lighthouses, scenic views and the Port of Ilwaco.
- Hike the various trails from the North end to the South end of the peninsula.
- Check out the North Head and Cape Disappointment Lighthouses in Ilwaco. Hiking trails lead up to the lighthouses and are a wonderful hiking experience.
- Stroll through historic Seaview and Oysterville and see the many homes built in the 1800's.
- Tour the historic Oysterville Church and view the graves of our early settlers at the Oysterville Cemetery.
- There's always a breeze at the beach so grab your kite and have some fun!
- Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic.
- Tour Fort Columbia and explore the old war bunkers, military housing, Chinook Indian Interpretive Center and the magnificent view of the Columbia River.
- Walk along the shore of Willapa Bay and experience the breath taking view.
- Experience the boardwalk in Long Beach or enjoy a leisurely bike ride on the discovery trail.
These are just a few of the things available to our tourists who are fortunate to have visited our community over the years. If you haven't been able to get away for a few days, I hope this is an encouragement to you. We have a tremendous amount of fun activities for you and your loved ones to enjoy! What are you waiting for?
