Niigata (新潟県) is a prefecture of Japan located on Honshu island on the coast of the Sea of Japan. Niiagat is the largest city on the Japan Sea coast.The capital is the city of Niigata. The name Niigata literally means "New Lagoon". Niigata City has long prospered as a port town on the mouth of Japan's longest river, the Shinano River.
