Well you've traversed the world's cities and taken those delightful city tour. But for visiting tourists and resident Mumbaikars, other than the foodie places malls and shopping streets, the city considered quite bereft of any real culture stimulation. The truth is Mumbai is packed with history but is so overtaken by the lure of mammon that the more subtle delight have got completely overlooked.
Below are some attraction places in Mumbai
Mani Bhavan or then again have you (it's the abode when Mahatma Gandhi resided whenever in Mumbai) The favorite of all tourists coming to Mumbai. Mani Bhavan was home to Mahatma Gandhi whenever he visited Mumbai during the freedom struggle. It has a library, photographs and letters of Mahatma Gandhi and the doll museum depicting the various phases in his life. The two storeyed Mani Bhavan, which we are told has become a must-visit for foreign tourists because while Indians may give the Mahatma mere lip service, the rest of the world is still awed by his life and deeds. The quietude of his Mumbai dwellings which belonged to his friend Zakaria has a letter written by him to Hitler; a doll museum which depicts real life instances in Gandhiji's life like the Dandi March; and a library which has famed sayings of the man himself like 'All men are born free and equal', 'Life is greater than all art'.
Dhobi Ghat Open Air Laundry (that's where the British soldiers had their uniforms laundered with not a single piece of clothing getting addresses crossed). This place has become so well known with foreign tourists that they ask us to take them to Dhobi Ghat. One can see the old world launderette workings that sustain itself even to day. All that it requires for its final cachet of fame is for Prince Charles to visit to put it in the favored list a la dabbawallas.
The Prince of Wales Museum (with its varied and rare pieces of historical value). The different sections on natural history collections, archeology and priceless artwork. The fabulous pieces of art and artifacts housed in the museum have to be seen to be believed. The Prince of Wales Museum, of which we got nuggets of information of how an armour of Akbar the Great was with the museum for years without them deciphering the written text on it and thus being ignorant of the fact of who it belonged to!
The Haji Ali dargah, a tomb and mosque complex on an islet in the Worli bay. The causeway to the dargah gets submerged during high-tide. Named after a wealthy Muslim merchant who built the edifice in 1431, it is said Haji Ali died en route to Mecca and the casket containing his body floated back to J Mumbai. The dargah is visited by people of all faiths.
Dabbawalas (Tiffin box carrier ) The dabbawalas became famous worldwide when Prince Charles visited them and a documentary film was also shown on BBC. The dabbawalas are extremely professional as they distribute tiffin boxes in offices throughout the city with literally no margin of error. About 5,000 dabbawalas distribute 2,00,000 tiffin boxes everyday. Many business schools invite the dabbawalas for a presentation on their occupation as a part of their case studies.
Gateway of India: The most prominent landmark in the city built on the sea front in December, 1911 to memorialize the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city. This is one landmark you can't ignore while touring Mumbai. Also from here people can go to Elephanta caves by taking ferry boats which another attraction point in Mumbai.
