Malta Hotels

Malta hotels are exceptionally unique. Because of the country's long history involving the Knights of Malta, who built Valletta into a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are numerous palaces. These were built primarily on Malta Island, largest island in the archipelago, as residences for the wealthy Knights and other Maltese aristocracy. Some of them, like the Dragonara Palace in Paceville (now a casino), were built as lavish summer homes. Some are Malta hotels (like the splendid Xara Palace in Mdina) and pricey vacation rentals.

Because the country is comprised of Mediterranean islands, many visitors look for beach hotels in Malta as their first choices. Even though the country doesn't have the kind of endless beaches you will find in places like the Greek Islands, there are many beautiful stretches of sand on all three of the main islands. Almost all beach hotels in Malta are located on the eastern coasts of the islands, around Mellieha on Malta Island and around Marsalforn on Gozo Island. The only one of the Malta hotels on tiny Comino Island is also on its east coast. The western coasts are quite rugged, with dramatic cliffs that are great for hiking. There are some small beaches in secluded coves here, but many are accessible only by boat or on foot.

Beach hotels in Malta come in all varieties, from large five star resorts to small properties with modest bungalows and villas. The longest and best public beaches are found around this area. Here you will find just about every kind of beachside property including fairly cheap Malta lodging that may not sit right on the beach, but will be located only a block or two away. The Seabank Hotel is an example of resort type accommodation in Malta right on the beach. This is a particularly popular property for family holidays because of dedicated children's areas and supervised activities for youngsters, as well as family rooms sleeping up to five guests.

Cheap Malta lodging can be found both in the towns and cities as well as in the countryside. Some of the best in both places are small family-run guesthouses and bed and breakfast inns. In the countryside, these are apt to be farmhouses with several hundred years of history. The majority of these are found on Gozo Island. In the towns and cities, they are apt to be villas or mansions that also boast centuries of history. The charming Castille Hotel in Valetta is an example of the latter. It was built as the residence of a prominent family at the turn of the sixteenth century and has only 38 unique rooms, a small restaurant located in the mansion's former wine cellar, and a coffee shop in the former stables.

Young people from around the world flock to Paceville for its famous nightlife, and look for cheap Malta lodging where they can share the cost of accommodation and save money on dining out costs by doing much of their own cooking. They often find these in aparthotels in Paceville and St Julians, some of which have facilities and services of hotel like housekeeping and swimming pools.
