It is situated on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay just an hour drive from Melbourne. Some of Australia's best sandy beaches are here with a variety of water activities including sailing, fishing, surfing, scuba diving and swimming with the dolphins and seals.
Mornington Peninsula tourism is famous for its bay beaches as well as its wines especially Chardonnay and Pinot. Point Nepean, at the tip of the peninsula, is one of several parks that together are known as Mornington Peninsula National Park. It consists of Fort Nepean and its defenses, an old army base and a quarantine station. There are beautiful walkways around the park and Cape Schanck has a historic lighthouse with fantastic views. There are gorgeous beaches all around and the biggest attraction here is swimming with seals and dolphins. There are also over 50 vineyards in the inland producing excellent quality red and white wines. Some of these wineries have restaurants attached to them that serve wine and gourmet food. The wineries produce a selection of award wining wines including 'Pinot' Chardonnay and Merlot wines along with shiraz and the lesser known varieties of viognier and pinot gris. If you prefer not to drive to the Mornington Peninsula vineyards and wineries, there are bus tours which you can join.
