The Chiang Rai province is best known for its cultural and historical attractions. From the traditional hill-tribe villages near the Kok River to the Golden Triangle and Mae Fah Luang Cultural Park, Chiang Rai Thailand is a traveler's dream destination. Being the northernmost region, Chiang Rai is mostly mountainous and home to beautiful scenic views. It is located on the Kok River basin about 487 miles from Bangkok, and with an area of more than 4,000 square miles, the Chiang Rai province extends to the borders of Laos and Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). Although the region became the center of the Lanna Kingdom during the thirteenth century, it was well-settled as far back as the late seventh century. For instance, the Bo Nam Ron hot spring situated in the Tambon Me Chedi Mai area of Wiang Pa Pao is an excellent destination for a relaxing Chiang Rai tourism experience. The Khun Chae National Park in the Wiang Pa Pao district is also a top destination for adventure enthusiasts; the park is best known for its campy atmosphere. Visitors interested in adventurous Chiang Rai travel will find several hilltops, cliffs, jungles, and beautiful waterfalls to explore.
Chiang Rai Thailand hosts a variety of activities for travelers. Besides camping and trekking, the region is quite famous for incredible mountain biking. The mountains of Chiang Rai have an extensive network of dirt roads that create the perfect atmosphere for mountain biking. Another popular activity is the long-tail boat ride along the Kok River. Popular festivals include the Chiang Rai flower festival, the Lichi Fair, and the Blooming Mexican Sunflower Festival. The local art also attracts a number of travelers in the region. Chiang Rai is very well-known for its musical instruments, particularly the panpipe called the kaen and the sau, which a type of a flute. Most arts and crafts collectors always favor Chiang Rai travel because of the local handicrafts they can find, such as decorative umbrellas, miniature clay tea-sets, charcoal stoves, stone-carved Buddha images, and bronze work.
