Experience cultural diversity and amazing gothic architecture in the historic capital city of Palma de Mallorca. More than half of Mallorca’s residents live in this holiday hotspot. Take a trip through the old town to view majestic cathedrals, wander the Castell de Bellver, or visit the sandy Palma de Mallorca beaches. Located in the southwest corner of the island on Palma Bay, this bustling city is the main commercial center and chief port of the Balearic Islands.
Palma de Mallorca was founded by the Romans around 120 BC. In fact, walls from the early Roman settlement are still visible in Almudaina today. The history of the city is visible in its architecture, everywhere from the Majorcan Museum to the Palma cathedral, to the 10th century Moorish Majorcan baths. The baths are the only remaining Moorish architecture in Palma, which was invaded and conquered several times. Now, Palma"s modern legacy is based on tourism. Palma was, and still is, a retreat for Spanish royalty, which led to the city’s popularity with celebrities. Well blended with the glamour are old landmarks, cafes, and the native Mallorquin dialect in the backstreets of Palma de Mallorca that serve as a reminder of the city’s historic past. Another notable attraction is the Municipal Museum, housed in Castell del Bellver. Built in 1309, this castle that once served as a summer home for Mallorca’s kings.
Depnding on when travelers visit Palma, a festival could provide exciting entertainment. Every January, hundreds of horseback riders and colorful floats fill Palma’s streets before the animal blessings of Sant Antoni begin. After the blessings of Sant Antoni, come the fiestas of Sant Sebastia. Palma will springs to life with live music in its plazas and street entertainment. On Easter weekend, take in the Carnival fiestas. These festivals and others are sure to thrill any tourist.
After venturing through the city streets, be sure to relax at the Palma de Mallorca beaches, most of which are close to the city. Magaluf is one of the most active beaches on Mallorca, attracting mainly young travelers and known especially for its night life. Parasail, water ski, or hire a pedal boat to enjoy the waters of Arenal, or try one of the local favorites by visiting the Ciudad Jardin beach. One of the smaller Palma de Mallorca beaches is Es Portitxolet, which has restaurants that serve great fish.
Resorts in Palma de Mallorca and hotels suit all budgets. Palma’s Castillo Hotel Son Vida, once a medieval castle is packed with art and antiques. The resorts in Palma de Mallorca closest to the airport are C’an Pastilla, Palma Nova, and Magaluf. Other resorts in Palma de Mallorca are just a 10 minute drive from the airport, letting travelers start their adventures as soon as possible.
Much of Palma de Mallorca can be seen on foot, and the public transportation system is very efficient. After all, no one wants to have a hard time exploring all the wonders they will find in this vivacious city.
