Gyeongju is one of the most fascinating places in South Korea. The entire city is a veritable national treasure and is often referred to as the “museum without walls.” This is due to the fact that it is a treasure trove of culturally and historically significant artifacts and items related to the history of the Korean peninsula. It is situated along the coast of the Sea of Japan (or East Sea) in the southeastern part of the Gyeongsang Province. It is not only a popular tourist attraction because of all of the amazing things to do in Gyeongju, but also because it is so easily reached from some of the largest population centers in the country. Gyeongju borders Ulsan to the north and is only about 30 miles from Daegu. The capital city of Seoul is approximately 230 miles to the north and east.

Tumuli Park is one of the main attractions in Gyeongju. It is designated as National Treasure # 175 in South Korea and the tombs here are thought to be the places where ancient kings and heads of the Korean state rest in peace. Besides the impressive variety of unique burial sites, there are a variety of pavilions, and landscaped park areas that make it one of the most beautiful plots of land in the city. Tumuli Park is definitely a destination you should put on your list if you are staying in this part of South Korea.

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom, which was in existence for almost the all of the first 1,000 years A.D., and ruled virtually the entire Korean peninsula from the seventh through the ninth centuries. Some of the most treasured relics and artifacts remain from this period. One of the best things to do in Gyeongju is to visit the Bulguksa Temple. This spiritual place is seated in the foothills of the North Gyeongsang Province. It is a must-see for anyone traveling to this part of the country and looking for things to do in Gyeongju.

The Gyeongju National Park is a treasured area in South Korea where you can see some of the most visually stunning topography combined with elegantly manicured lawns and trees. The green and lush rolling hills make it easy to understand why this particular plot of land was set aside as a national park.

The Cheomseongdae Observatory is another of the most popular attractions in this city that begins to resemble that museum without walls the more time you spend there. It is the oldest observatory in all of East Asia, and one of the most ancient establishments for the purpose of scientific investigation in the entire world. It was originally constructed in the middle part of the seventh century. It is fascinating to go inside the observatory and think about the advanced thinking that must have been taking place to have an ordered and systematic approach to observing the stars even back then. The observatory is just one more reason to travel to the marvelous city of Gyeongju. There are also plenty of Gyeongju hotels in the area so you will have no problem finding an accommodation near all of the attractions.
