Skiing in Germany is not as well known as the ski scenes in other European countries, but it is worth checking out and can make an excellent ski vacation. It's true that those who want to ski in Europe will often go to the Alps in Switzerland or Austria, but there is a surprising amount of both skiing and snowboarding in Germany. Certainly the peaks tend to be higher in Austria or Switzerland, but it"s a long drive around the mountains. Meanwhile, the resorts in Germany are usually only an hour or two away from Munich.
When it comes to Alpine skiing in Germany or snowboarding in Germany, your best bet will be the many ski areas that dot the Bavarian Alps. Out of all the resorts though, the most popular is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With picturesque mountains dominating the view, Garmisch features the highest peak in Germany--Zugspitze. The tradition of winter sports in Garmisch runs all the way back to 1936 when it hosted the Winter Olympics. The resort is easily reached by train from Munich. Once you arrive, a cable car will lift you up to the top of the stunning Zugspitze glacier. With 73 miles of runs, the quality and variety of trails is quite impressive. Garmisch is also conveniently located for those looking to visit the beautiful Neuschwanstein castle--it"s only an hour away.
There are more options than Garmisch for those that want to do a little skiing or snowboarding in Germany. None are as large as Garmisch, but Oberstdorf, Oberammergau, and Berchtesgadener Land are all fair alternatives.
If you"re looking to do a little cross-country skiing in Germany then you"ll find plenty of opportunities. Some of the alpine areas feature pleasant trails, including one area that hosted the Nordic Ski World Championships in 1987. Garmisch itself boasts 68 miles of cross-country area--featuring both skating and traditional trails.
Perhaps the best location for cross-country is the Black Forest Germany skiing. Discover over 600 miles of snowy trails through the woods and hills. There are even lit trails for those night owls that want to get in a run. If you want a challenge, look for Neustadt. There in the Black Forest Germany skiing you can find its 60 mile trek. Feldberg is the highest mountain in the area and its 75 mile trail in the Black Forest Germany skiing is also recommended.
Need a break from skiing in Germany? Cozy up with a hot beverage in one of the many lodges in these resorts. If you"d rather stay outside you"ll often find sledding and tobogganing. Garmisch has a two and a half mile run for sledders, complete with nets along some areas for safety. No matter what activity you pick, you"re sure to win during your winter trip to Germany.
