Stay in the heart of a city with two souls...

Bergamo is two cities in one. Most tourists rush through the lower town, the Città Bassa, on their way to the splendid Città Alta or upper town. But discerning travellers in search of a truly authentic experience take the time to appreciate the lively atmosphere of the Città Bassa.

The heart of the lower town is the Sentierone, the central piazza. And just around the corner sits the Best Western Premier Hotel Cappello d'Oro, with its elegant ochre façade. The hotel has been a landmark of the Città Bassa since the 19th century. Originally a restaurant and inn, it is located right next to what was called the Porta Nuova, the main entrance to the city. The access used to be closed at 10:00 PM each night which was pointed out by the 100 bell strokes that can still be heard today at the very same time. Porters would sit outside the inn, waiting to transport people or goods up to the Città Alta for a fee. The porters wore yellow caps, "Cappello d'Oro", from which the hotel gets its name.

Its prime location in the heart of the thriving Città Bassa makes the Best Western Premier Hotel Cappello d'Oro a popular stopover. Situated halfway between the train station and the funicular to the upper town, the Best Western Premier Hotel Cappello d'Oro is incredibly convenient.

The hotel's tradition of Italian hospitality is present at every moment. The attentive staff and the arrangements of fresh flowers welcome you as you enter the sleek reception area. You are immediately greeted by a combination of old-world charm and modern efficiency, as witnessed by the smooth wooden curves of the reception desk and the elegant Italian marble floors. Around each corner are interesting works of art. There are sculptures, including figures by Gianni Remuzzi, as well as paintings by Galvani and from the Caravaggio school.

Renovated in 2001, the hotel's bright, clean design of the public spaces extends into the hotel's restaurant and its rooms. As you would expect in Italy, the restaurant has a long history of quality food. Before becoming part of the hotel, the Del Moro restaurant was owned by Domenico Ruggeri, aka Barbisù, who invented the famous Carello dei Bolliti, a regional speciality of boiled beef in a salsa verde. Other dishes include Casoncelli, the signature pasta dish of Bergamo, and regional produce, such as polenta and salami.

The splendid buffet breakfast is served in the classically appointed dining area, complete with a fireplace and original artwork displayed in gilded frames. Relax on the La Corte terrace café with a glass of red or white Valcalepio, the wine grown to the east of Bergamo. The quiet rooms are the epitome of comfort, with their high ceilings, tall windows and generous proportions.

Step out the front door and you will find yourself in a lively shopping district frequented by locals. The Sentierone piazza, with its melange of architectural styles, gardens and cafés, is a lively example of modern Italian living. Art lovers will be stupefied by the amazing collection of paintings housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia Carrara, which isn't far from the hotel. Connoisseurs of classical music, opera and theatre will enjoy the performances held at the Teatro Donizetti, native of Bergamo.

Just a few steps away from the hotel is the funicular, which will carry you up to the architectural splendour of the Città Alta. At the heart of the old town are two adjoining squares, the Piazza Vecchia and the Piazza del Duomo. The mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture that characterizes the Piazzas inspired Stendhal to call the heart of old Bergamo "the most beautiful place on earth." Surrounded by 16th century ramparts and perched on a verdant hill, the Città Alta offers magnificent vistas overlooking the plains below.

Located in the heart of this bastion of culture, the Best Western Premier Hotel Cappello d'Oro offers you the best of the dual soul of Bergamo.
