A magnificent glass chalet in the heart of a unique site

The Swiss architect who designed the Best Western Premier Parkhotel Bad Mergentheim had a very simple idea: invite nature as much as possible inside the hotel. As a result, the exterior is encased in sheets of glass, many of which are slanted. One of the advantages of this architectural choice is that each guestroom commands a splendid view of the surrounding countryside through individual loggia or balcony bay windows. The architect also endeavoured to create a construction so light that it would not detract from its delicate environment. This architectural concept is all the more justified by the quality of the hotel's setting in the heart of the park of mineral springs of Bad Mergentheim. Hundred-year-old trees and a lovely rose garden contribute to the exceptional beauty of this park. Mankind's contribution lies in a spectacular system of musical fountains, overlooked by some of the guestrooms, that one never tires of admiring. In fact, the architect so successfully integrated the establishment into the surrounding countryside that the park's ducks often knock on the breakfast room windows, begging for crumbs of pastries and bread.

The meeting rooms and restaurant of the Best Western Premier Parkhotel Bad Mergentheim are also flooded in the soft light of the Taubertal, as beneficial as its springs. The fate of the little town of Mergentheim, to which it owes the "Bad" in its name, was sealed in 1826, when a shepherd, Franz Gehrig, discovered a mineral spring while out with his flock. After a period of enviable prosperity thanks to the powerful Order of Teutonic Knights that had brought safety and wealth for many years, the small town had grown accustomed to its gradual decline once the Order was dismantled in 1809. The discovery of these mineral-rich springs reversed the town's fortunes and established a new Art de Vivre, just as they brought newfound health to many people. The town has inherited a rich split personality based on the legacy of the medieval Order of Teutonic Knights and the charm of spa towns. To the former, it owes in particular its castle, whose distinctive architecture leaves none in any doubt as to the power and influence of its owners, and the extraordinary Madonna and child by Mathis Grünewald exhibited in the chapel of Stuppach. The rare and singularly intense portrayal of the relation between Mary and the baby Jesus is justly famous because of the rich colours and the light radiating from the faces that floods the painting. It is representative of a quality of fervour and talent that has marked both religion and the history of art. To its spa origins, Bad Mergentheim owes its delightful combination of timeless elegance and an outmoded lifestyle. Good food and wine are a prominent feature of this ambience, particularly due to very fine wines such as white Riesling and red Trollinger and Spätburgunder. It is perhaps the only region in Germany where more wine than beer is drunk and also a region that boasts no less than 60 Michelin stars!

Here, perhaps more than elsewhere, the Best Western Premier Parkhotel Bad Mergentheim deserves as much acclaim for its environment as for its interior. And if guests feel so comfortable inside, it is no doubt because they know they are in an establishment that is so perfectly in tune with the environment.
